How to Brief a Web Designer (So You Get What You Envision)

Lead with outcomes, not adjectives

'Modern, clean, premium' means something different to everyone in the room. 'We need demo requests from operations managers at mid-size logistics firms, and they currently can't tell we serve their industry in the first five seconds' is a brief anyone can act on. Describe the visitor, the job, and the obstacle — your designer will translate it into visuals better than any mood board.

Bring evidence, not just taste

The two most useful references you can bring: three sites you admire with a sentence on exactly what you admire (the clarity of the pricing page, the tone of the copy), and honest numbers from your current site — where visitors come from, where they leave. Taste sets direction; evidence sets constraints. Together they replace most of the guesswork.

Name your deal-breakers early

Brand rules, fonts you are locked into, a color the founder hates, compliance copy that must appear, launch dates tied to a campaign — surface all of it on day one. A deal-breaker discovered at review two costs triple what it costs in the brief, and it costs trust on top. Your designer will thank you; surprises are the only bad news in this business.

Decide how decisions will be made

The most common failure mode is not bad design — it is committee feedback. If five stakeholders give conflicting notes across three rounds, no process survives. Pick one decision-maker, gather input before feedback, and keep revisions to defined rounds. That single structural choice predicts project satisfaction better than budget does.

A mini-template you can steal

One page is enough: what the site must achieve, who it serves, the three sites you like and why, your deal-breakers, your timeline, and your budget range. Sharing a real budget range is not weakness — it lets your designer scope honestly instead of guessing, and it is why fixed-scope quotes like ours can be firm. Send that to any competent studio and you are already ahead of most clients they will meet this year.
